Woburn Chiropractic Treatment and Cervicogenic Headache

We see a large number of folks with headaches in our Woburn office, and Dr. Ellis has been able to provide relief for many of them. Actually, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 50% of all adults have difficulties with some type of headache problems, so this actually isn't shocking. One of the most common kinds of headaches that our patients experience is cervicogenic headache which, luckily, chiropractic therapy can usually help.

Cervicogenic Headaches Explained

A cervicogenic headache is one that arises from a problem in the cervical spine. It can easily be attributable to an issue with either the spine itself (in particular, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it might be due to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This dysfunction in your spine contributes to constriction or aggravation of the spinal nerves, which can bring about headache issues.

How do you know if the headache you are going through is a cervicogenic headache? Besides obtaining a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a common symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is occasionally followed by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

Chiropractic to the Rescue

Because cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever problem is causing them is remedied, it is vital to get treatment as opposed to just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an excellent approach, and one that can provide a considerable amount of pain relief.

In one study printed in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, experts studied 80 people who had regular cervicogenic headaches. One-half got chiropractic care and the other fifty percent underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the treatment and it was discovered that chiropractic offered the most beneficial results.

In particular, this study noted that chiropractic adjustments provided patients more pain relief and decreased the frequency of headaches that occurred. What's more, it also diminished the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
