Don't Choose Drugs for Back Pain

Chiropractic More Effective than Drugs for Back Pain

In our Woburn & Chelmsford, MA office, Dr. James Ellis & Dr. Lyndsay Martin has helped countless patients heal from back problems. If you suffer from back pain, you've probably been tempted to take some medications to decrease the pain. You should understand that research shows that chiropractic care is oftentimes a much healthier choice than drugs when it comes to alleviating this common type of problem.

In a 2013 study published in the medical journal Spine experts included 101 subjects who had suffered back pain for more than 48 hours. Each individual was then assigned to one of three groups. The first group, which was made up of 37 patients, received chiropractic care and a placebo of the NSAID diclofenac. The second group of 38 individuals received sham chiropractic adjustments and the genuine drug. The third group of 25 subjects served as the control as those subjects engaged in sham chiropractic and also received the placebo, thus having no real treatment whatsoever.

Both of the groups that received some type of treatment, whether through chiropractic or the medication, fared better than the control subjects who had no actual therapy. However, when the two active groups were compared to each other, the subjects who received chiropractic care had results that were "significantly better" than those who took the drug diclofenac.

Chiropractic Promotes Natural Healing

Because chiropractic care is non-invasive and doesn't use drugs, it helps enhance healing without unwanted side effects. For example, NSAIDs can result in ulcers, high blood pressure, and other serious health complications. Plus, the health benefits of chiropractic last longer as it's designed to correct the source of the spinal interference, not just treat the signs and symptoms.
